7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro via the Rongai route near the Kenyan border is a great alternative route. It helps climbers reach the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro .This mountain stands tall as the highest in Africa (5895m). The route approaches the summit from the less forested north face. It is a great alternative for those who prefer to climb a less crowded route to the top of Kilimanjaro. It is also less steep and less rainy than other routes.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Depart from Nairobi, cross the border to Tanzania, and trek through the forest to Machame Hut (3000m).
- Hike across valleys and ridges, reaching Shira Hut (3800m) with views of the Shira Plateau.
- Ascend towards Kibo, pass the Lava Tower, and descend to Barranco Hut (3940m) for acclimatization.
- Climb the Barranco Wall and reach Barafu Hut (4600m), preparing for summit day.
- Early morning ascent to Stella Point, then Uhuru Peak (5895m), followed by descent to Mweka Hut.
- Descend to Mweka Gate, then transfer to Arusha for a hot shower and dinner.

DAY BY DAY
You will drive from Moshi to marangu gate for permits before taking a short transfer to the Rongai gate trailhead. The path winds through corn and potato field and then climbs gently through the forest which is home to a variety of wildlife. Distance of 8km hiking for 3-4 hours.
Our adventure begins this morning with a steady incline up to second cave. You continue trekking through moorland leaving the main trail for a smaller path towards the mawezi peak before finally arriving the kikelewa cave for the night.
The hike for today is short and steep up a grassy slope. Views of the wilderness area are stunning. As you exit the heath zone and emerge into the alpine desert zone, the landscape changes dramatically. Your camp is situated beneath the jagged spires of mawezi at mawezi tarn. You spend the rest of the day relaxing and exploring the area.

This is an extra day meant for acclimatization and can be spent day hiking on mawezi ridge. The unique landscape offers motivating views of Kibo and mawezi. After spending some time exploring the area, you head back to mawezi tarn for camp.

You climb gradually and then cross the lunar desert of the “saddle” between mawezi and Kibo. Your camp Kibo hut sits at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall. Once you are here, you will rest, enjoy an early dinner to prepare for the summit day.

Very early in the morning around midnight, you begin your push to the summit. It is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. The wind and cold and this elevation and time of day can be extreme. You ascend in the darkness for several hours while taking frequent but short breaks. At Gilman’s point, you will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see coming over mawezi peak. Finally, you arrive at uhuru peak the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro. You later descend to horombo hut in the evening and enjoy your last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.

On your last day you have a long trek mostly downhill through the tropical rainforest. Once at marangu gate you collect your summit certificate and later driven back to Moshi.
