Lake Kivu

OVerview

Lake Kivu, situated along Africa’s Great Rift Valley, lies between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Covering approximately 2,700 square kilometers, it ranks as Rwanda’s largest lake and Africa’s sixth largest. The lake’s shores are dotted with towns such as Gisenyi, Kibuye, and Cyangugu in Rwanda, and Bukavu and Goma in the DRC. Lake Kivu supports diverse fish species, providing over 20,000 tons of fish annually, which bolsters local economies and food security.

However, the lake’s deep waters contain dissolved gases like carbon dioxide and methane, posing potential risks of limnic eruptions, though such events are rare. Despite these risks, Lake Kivu remains a vital resource and a scenic destination, attracting visitors with its natural beauty and recreational opportunities.
